Initial growth and development of southern sandbur based on thermal units Planta Daninha
Machado,E.C.R.; Lima,R.S.O.; Silva,A.P.P.; Marques,B.S.; Gonçalves,M.F.; Carvalho,S.J.P..
Availability of basic information on weed biology is an essential tool for designing integrated management programs for agricultural systems. Thus, this study was carried out in order to calculate the base temperature (Tb) of southern sandbur (Cenchrus echinatus), as well as fit the initial growth and development of the species to accumulated thermal units (growing degree days - GDD). For that purpose, experimental populations were sown six times in summer/autumn conditions (decreasing photoperiod) and six times in winter/spring condition (increasing photoperiod). Southern sandbur phenological evaluations were carried out, on alternate days, and total dry matter was measured when plants reached the flowering stage. All the growth and development fits were...

Interference of Noxious Shrubs on Grazing Behavior by Bovines Planta Daninha
MARCHI,S.R.; SILVA,H.M.; FERREIRA,C.F.; MARQUES,R.F.; MORAES,J.B..
ABSTRACT: The grazing behavior practice by bovines can be positive or negatively influenced by the pasture structure where the animal is inserted. Several factors determine the pasture structure and the presence of weeds is considered one of the most important. This study aimed to assess the effect of species with and without stiff structures over the grazing behavior of bovines in pasture areas. The experimental design was a split block design with four replications, in which treatments were arranged in a 4 x 3 factorial design: four weed species (Zanthoxylum rhoifolium, Cnidoscolus urens, Dasyphyllum brasiliensis, and Luehea divaricata) associated with three proximity strips of weeds: 0-50, 50-100, and 100-150 cm in relation to the main stem of the...

Leaf Consumption and Preference to Conyza sp., Conventional and Bt Soybean by Helicoverpa armigera Planta Daninha
CUTTI,L.; MURARO,D.S.; SILVA,V.A.; KASPARY,T.E.; BASSO,C.J.; ROGGIA,S..
ABSTRACT: Helicoverpa armigera caterpillars are polyphagous and exhibit high migratory potential. Given the traits of this pest, alternative hosts located in or near the crop stand may support the survival and permanence of H. armigera in the field. The aim of this study was to investigate Conyza sp. as a food source for H. armigera caterpillars in scenarios with conventional and Bt soybean. Two experiments were conducted in biochemical oxygen demand incubators. The first assessed consumption of conventional soybean, Bt soybean and Conyza sp. leaves by 3rd and 5th instar caterpillars, with no choice given (no-choice test). The second test evaluated the food preference of 3rd instar H. armigera larvae, with two choices given (dual-choice test). Fifth instar...

Management Of Commelina benghalensis with Saflufenacil in Shaded Environments Planta Daninha
SANTOS JUNIOR,A.; FREITAS,F.C.L.; SANTOS,I.T.; SILVA,D.C.; PAIXÃO,G.P.; SEDIYAMA,C.S..
ABSTRACT: The repetitive use of glyphosate in the control of weeds in eucalyptus plantations has selected tolerant species such as Commelina benghalensis. Therefore, the use of herbicides of other mechanisms of action, such as saflufenacil, in rotation or combination with glyphosate, is necessary to reduce damages caused by C. benghalensis, whose sensitivity to herbicides can be influenced by the shading caused by the eucalyptus crop. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of saflufenacil in the management of C. benghalensis at different shading levels. Three experiments were carried out regarding a certain shading level (cultivation environment with 0, 40, and 55% shade). The experimental design was a randomized block design with five herbicide doses...

MANAGEMENT OF PARTHENIUM WEED USING METABOLITES OF Alternaria japonica Planta Daninha
JAVAID,A.; MUBEEN,T; BASHIR,U; SHOAIB,A.
ABSTRACT Parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) is an alien invasive weed infesting many parts of the world including Pakistan. A number of herbicides have been recommended for control of this weed, but these herbicides have issues regarding human health and environmental safety. In the current study, the herbicidal potential of culture filtrates of a fungal species, namely Alternaria japonica, was evaluated against parthenium weed. The fungal species was grown in malt extract broth (MEB) and potato dextrose broth (PDB) for 15 days. Culture filtrates were obtained by passing the materials through muslin cloth followed by filtration through filter paper and then through Millipore filter paper. In laboratory bioassays, the effect of original (X) and diluted...

Digitaria species are sugar cane crop weeds in Brazil and are being controlled with herbicides, although there are some reports of control failure, notably to the triazine group. Molecular techniques are recommended to analyze the genetic variability in weeds. RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA), PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction – Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) and, in combination with sequencing, allow the localization of resistance genes, as well as possible mutations related to the onset of resistant individuals in some species. Thus, the objective of this work was to characterize ten accessions of Digitaria spp. by RAPD and PCR-RFLP markers, to sequence a conserved region of the psb A gene and evaluate the accessions response to...

Morpho-Architectural Traits that Allow the Regeneration of Eustachys retusa (poaceae) in Systems with Intensive Glyphosate Application Planta Daninha
PANIGO,E.S.; ALESSO,C.A.; DELLAFERRERA,I.M.; OLIVELLA,J.; PERRETA,M.G..
ABSTRACT Eustachys retusa has low sensitivity to glyphosate at the reproductive stage. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of glyphosate on adult E. retusa plants in order to identify the traits that make possible their regeneration in no-tillage systems. For this purpose, reproductive-stage specimens from wild populations were treated with glyphosate at two different rates (480 and 1,200 g a.i. ha-1) including a non-treated control. Results demonstrated that glyphosate could control E. retusa plants at reproductive stage at 1,200 g a.i. ha-1 dose. However, a certain proportion of plants can survive despite having full chlorosis as a consequence of basal bud activation (bud bank) and the presence of reserves in the rhizome. These...

Multiple introductions and gene flow in subtropical South American populations of the fireweed, Senecio madagascariensis(Asteraceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mäder,Geraldo; Castro,Luana; Bonatto,Sandro Luis; Freitas,Loreta Brandão de.
Abstract Non-indigenous plants exhibit different attributes that make them aggressive competitors with indigenous plants and serious threats to biodiversity.Senecio madagascariensis (fireweed, Asteraceae), a native from southern Africa, is a strong competitor in agricultural activities and has toxic alkaloids that may result in high cattle mortality. In Brazil, this weed was collected for the first time in 1995 and has since spread quickly throughout the Pampas region. To better understand the invasion of the fireweed in South America, we used a genetic characterization with internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and microsatellite markers. Based on the ITS data, the southern Brazil populations of S. madagascariensis shared genetic homology with samples taken...
